The Half Life of Valery K (ebook), Natasha Pulley

I’ve bought this book precisely because of this review - I’ve just finished reading it and… The book is a literally gem that seamlessly blends historical events with a dash of speculative fiction. That pretty much creates a narrative that is both enthralling and thought-provoking. For context, the story sets against the backdrop of the Soviet Union’s secretive scientific endeavors during the Cold War era. In my opinion, “The Half Life of Valery K” is a must-read for anyone who revels interest in historical fiction with a speculative twist. While the main characters and certain elements (e.g human trials) might be products of the author’s imagination, the rich historical tapestry on which the narrative is woven instills a sense of authenticity that resonates deeply. The vivid depiction of the era and lingering questions it raises makes this book a valuable addition to any reader’s collection, to be honest. Thanks @peggy for this rec

Freakonomics

Just wow! An economics book but with a sociological perspective. Facts proven by numbers and unimaginably realistic analogies are stated in a this great book written by Stephen J. Dubner and Steven D. Levitt. 10/10

‎The Lodger | Apple Books

A CLASSIC! The Lodger was based on the unsolved murders attributed to Jack the Ripper and it’s “a gothic novel of ever-building suspense and a page-turning exploration of fear, guilt, and moral responsibility”. If you enjoy psychological thrillers then, you should give this classic story a try.

‎The Strange Death of Europe

Currently reading this book… It has been making me reflect a lot about how Europe has been, indeed, digging its own grave. Several important topics are mentioned, like birth-rates, failure of multiculturalism but more importantly: migration. Migration and the religious matter attached to it. Very interesting so far as I feel it’s an eye-opener for many situations that have been happening in the continent.

O Segredo da Bastarda by Cristina Norton

I must say: this is my favorite book, by far! It is a historical-romance book about Eugénia de Meneses (granddaughter of the Marquis of Marialva) who, since her birth, was meant to be a woman of such a “sad fate”. It tells us the story of how D. João VI raped young Eugénia. An event muffled by the Royal Order for more than 200 years. Amazingly written!
