Apollo 10½ A Space Age Childhood 👩🏻‍🚀

Ieder kind - en volwassene trouwens - fantaseert over het moment dat zij uitgekozen worden om de wereld te redden. Ze zijn onmisbaar voor de missie.

Zo cruciaal blijkt Stan als tienjarige in deze film voor de maanlanding.

Veel belangrijker dan die fantasie is het prachtige (geweldig voorbeeld van rotoscope animatie - look it up) inkijkje in deze jaren ‘60 zomers. Ik kan door dit soort films zo’n sterke nostalgie voelen voor tijden die ik nooit heb meegemaakt. Dit waren de zomers van mijn moeder, de zomers waar Bill Bryson zo geweldig over schrijft, dit is de jeugd van filmmaker Richard Linklater (nu snap je ineens waar die blik en vertraagde verhalen in zijn andere films vandaan komen), prachtig vormgegeven door de lome warme trage dagen in contrast met de spanning van de maanlanding.

Hoe het moet zijn geweest om als kind op die eerste televisies naar de voorbereiding op de maanlanding te kijken. Wat voelde je, hoe zag je je ouders kijken?

“Linklater makes this lucid dream of unsung kid heroism only a very small part of what is otherwise an overwhelmingly real, almost novelistically low-key film: a basically plotless account of just what it was like to be a kid in Houston in the late 60s. It’s a nonstop madeleine-fest, a revival of memories curated with passionate connoisseurship: the ice-cream flavours, the TV shows, the drive-in movies, the schoolyard games, the parents, the eccentric grandparents, the theme park rides, the neighbours, the prank phone calls – and the fact that Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color was on Sunday night TV and so unfairly saturated with next-day school dread.”
