The Best Kennedy Speech Ever

Is niet van JFK, maar van z’n broertje Robert. Dit is niet alleen één van de beste speeches aller tijden*, maar uit ‘68 en in ‘23 actueler dan ooit.

*Volgens beste spreker ooit Barack Obama.

Robert Kennedy spreekt op de Kansas University over protest - lees dat stuk Extinction Rebellion liefhebbers:

"If our colleges and universities do not breed people who riot, who rebel, who attack life with all the youthful vision and vigor, then there is something wrong with our colleges. The more riots that come out of our college campuses the better the world for tomorrow."

Minstens even mooi en belangrijk vind ik zijn opmerkingen over het BNP, over het meten van welvaart.

“That Gross National Product counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for the people who break them. It counts the destruction of the redwood and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl. It counts napalm and counts nuclear warheads and armored cars for the police to fight the riots in our cities.

Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country, it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.

Kortom: als we kijken hoe het gaat met ons land meten we precies niet de dingen die ons leven mooier maken, die bepalen hoe het écht gaat, met ons.

Laten we onze moed en compassie meten, hoe leuk onze kinderen spelen en hoe bijzonder onze relaties zijn.
