Als je voelt dat alles te snel gaat en de wereld in de brand staat en je je schuldig voelt dat je mensen niet opneemt en de weinig doet aan de brand…

Als je katerig en te laat op je fiets zit naar een volgende lawine van afspraken en je op je telefoon het nieuws checkt terwijl je dat niet meer wilde doen - je telefoon op de fiets én om de vijf minuten het nieuws kijken…

Dan moet je eigenlijk in één vrije middag deze prachtige koortsdroom van een novelle uitlezen.

Het is de zomer 2017, Trump en Brexit en bosbranden en Kathy gaat op vakantie en trouwen en verhuizen en schrijft alles op wat ze denkt en dat klinkt zo:

“She drank too much, she hadn’t been to the gym in weeks, she basically lived on the couch, hunched and barely breathing. She needed clean air, vegetables, she despised comfort, there were too many pastries and radiators in her life. … She felt like she was hastening after agenda’s and appointments with a butterfly net, not able to make anything stick.

There’d been a series of pieces in the London Review of Books that she’d read carefully but now could barely recall beyond a slow stirring of nausea, the sense of the ground being parcelled off beneath her.

Oaks too, an impeccable landscape that in itself at once depended on and concealed all kinds of colonial atrocities, seemingly natural but totally false, anyway it was beautiful and she was in it and newly awake and disinclined to have to grapple with the potential end of all life.”

Al die dingen die je tegelijk kunt denken als je op een feestje, een balkon of in een file staat…

ps. 2e plaatje vond ik mooiere cover én is hoe het boek er na het lezen uit moet zien.
