Flee (2021) - IMDb
My favorite documentary of the year. In FLEE, Amin - who fled Afghanistan as a child - opens up for the first time to his best friend about his past, his trauma, and a secret he has kept for over 20 years. All told through animation to protect his identity. Incredible.

Don't Look Up
Slammed by critics and dividing Hollywood, I loved this timely sattire targeted at science deniers and the US government that is failing to appropriately act on climate change. A great portrayal of the crazy times we are living in. The ensemble cast is also unparalled: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchet, Timothée Chalamet, and Jonah Hill (who steals every scene).

Summer of Soul (2021) - IMDb
A frontrunner to win this year's Oscar for best documentary, Summer of Soul is an enthralling film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural festival, also dubbed "Black Woodstock". With pulsing live music footage of Nina Simone, Sly and Family Stone, Mahalia Jackson, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and many other greats, this doc will leave you inspired and in awe of the healing power of music. And - like me - you might even find yourself dancing in front of the TV. As the Guardian perhaps put it best: "Director Questlove's feature debut intertwines music and politics in one of the best concert movies of all time".

One Blade of Grass
More memoir than manual, this is a marvelous book by the English poet and Zen master Henry Shukman that takes the reader on a journey into the hidden treasures that contemplative practice can reveal to us. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Zen and meditation practice.

An intimate, relevant and under-appreciated look at the birth of one of the world’s biggest artists. This documentary observes the enviably talented and self-aware Billie Eilish navigating adolescence and superstar fame.
