Beautiful, honest, super sad book. I was reading this book on the first day of our year. Cried on the sofa in a house where everyone was already asleep. 10/10 would recommend if you struggle with our imminent end, and want to sit with that feeling for a while.

Waanzinnig boek van Maggie. Had beetje verwacht te leren dat Trump toch een stiekem genie zou zijn, blijkt gewoon toch dat ie gewoon écht een idioot is. Als het niet doodeng zou zijn, was het prachtig geweest. X

Tamelijk geniaal weer. Madeline Miller is voor mij de enige die erin slaagt eeuwenoude verhalen levend en van nu te laten voelen. Dit is een mega mooi kort verhaal, wat ze zelf betiteld als ‘reactie’ op de mythe van Pygmalion. Ook het nawoord zet deze oude mythe en bijbehorend impliciete cultuursymbolen ff weer in perspectief (witheid, maagdelijkheid, gehoorzaam- en onderdanigheid). I love!!!!!!

I feel grateful and terribly sad to have read this book. Grateful for all my queer ancestors that made my life today possible, and terribly sad about the fact that it all happened.

Rebecca did a great job at conveying how it was: living in times when AIDS was a death sentence, and a political vehicle to hate queer people.

Her way of writing made it so easy to empathise, to cry with them. This really happened. And it still does, only just out of sight…
