⌛️Time to Embrace Slow Productivity ⏳

Lees dit mooie artikel in the New Yorker! The issue in this evolution is not how many hours you’re now asked to work but the volume of work you’re assigned at any one time. … Humans are uniquely adept at crafting long-term strategic plans for accomplishing objectives. Our facility with planning, however, falters when confronting an in-box stuffed with hundreds of messages and a task list that fills multiple pages. When there’s too much for us to imagine actually completing, we short-circuit our executive functioning mechanisms, resulting in a feeling of anxious unease. … In this context, Slow Work-style efforts to simply reduce official work hours might actually make matters worse, as they do little to mitigate the stress of overload. What we need is a movement to reduce the volume of work that is assigned to us in the first place—a movement I call Slow Productivity. … The autonomy that defines the professional lives of those who toil in front of computer screens has led us into a trap of excessive work volume. We cannot escape this trap by expanding the weekend. We must ultimately brace ourselves for the larger challenge of slowing down the pace of the workday itself.”

“Collecting is an act of love; even though it risks fetish-like attachments to the objects in question, its essence is found not in the objects themselves but in the pleasure that they provide, by delivering movies, music, literature—by providing the experience of art. And the medium is more than a delivery system: it has an aesthetic and a psychology of its own. The prime factor of home video is control, and it’s the struggle for control, between corporate entities and individual viewers, that’s at play in the shift from physical media to streaming. With streaming, availability is out of one’s control and movie-watching becomes an activity conducted under the aegis of a big brother, however well-meaning. And that invisible hand isn’t always so benign, as indicated by ominous messages that sometimes pop up at the start of films to proclaim - as, for instance, has been seen on Disney+ - that “this film has been modified from its original version. It has been edited for content.” What vanished? Sex? Drugs? Cigarettes? Hateful dialogue? “Pervasive language”? Only by watching side by side with a DVD can one find out. The oddly intrusive feeling of each viewing being mediated bears a chill of surveillance. The shutdown or lockdown of a single site may eliminate all access to the only extant source for a major movie. Thus, physical media take on an essentially political role as the basis for samizdat, for the preservation in private of what’s neglected or suppressed or destroyed in the public realm, be it through mercantile vandalism, doctrinaire censorship, or technological apocalypse. Far from being nostalgic and conservative, the maintenance of a stock of physical media at home is a progressive act of defiance.”

Ecstasy (MDMA) heette ooit Therapy 💊

Wat citaten: “MDMA produces a substantial change in mental state that increases people’s ability to engage with traumatic material in psychotherapy.” “Many people still think of MDMA as a chemical that makes you feel good when you go out dancing all night long. But what if its greatest power is an ability to inspire empathetic conversations?” “In a Phase 2 clinical trial started in 2004, a hundred and seven people with a P.T.S.D. diagnosis received several weeks of talk therapy; during two of the sessions, about a month apart, participants received either MDMA or a placebo. When the study concluded, fifty-six per cent of those given MDMA and therapy no longer met the diagnostic criteria for the disorder, more than twice as many as those in the placebo group.” “Therapy is a social pursuit: a good therapist provides not just insight and tools but a relationship in which it’s possible to change. When someone takes MDMA in the presence of a therapist, they might feel more supported and secure in this bond, and more able to dredge up painful feelings or hard memories without being overwhelmed by fear or shame.” “It could be that MDMA simply intensifies something that’s already present in successful therapy. Therapy helps, in part, because human connection is good for us. It matters when someone listens to you, and when you listen. Recently, I reached out to John to ask him how he recalled our encounter in the dorm bathroom. On the phone, our old rapport quickly reëstablished itself; the longer we talked, the better I felt. When I asked about that day, he laughed and told me that he remembered our conversation as a soothing one. But he never suspected that we were on MDMA. “You guys were my friends,” he recalled. “I knew you were empathetic people.” That had been enough.”

The Case Against Travel 🧳

Ok. We moeten allemaal onze reizen opnieuw bezien. “Tourism is marked by its locomotive character. “I went to France.” O.K., but what did you do there? “I went to the Louvre.” O.K., but what did you do there? “I went to see the ‘Mona Lisa.’ ” That is, before quickly moving on: apparently, many people spend just fifteen seconds looking at the “Mona Lisa.” It’s locomotion all the way down.” Hun kennis, hun checklist, hun ansichtkaart: “The tourist is a deferential character. He outsources the vindication of his experiences to the ethnologist, to postcards, to conventional wisdom about what you are or are not supposed to do in a place. This deference, this “openness to experience,” is exactly what renders the tourist incapable of experience.” “Travel gets branded as an achievement: see interesting places, have interesting experiences, become interesting people. Is that what it really is? Pessoa, Emerson, and Chesterton believed that travel, far from putting us in touch with humanity, divorced us from it. Travel turns us into the worst version of ourselves while convincing us that we’re at our best. Call this the traveller’s delusion.” “The single most important fact about tourism is this: we already know what we will be like when we return. Travel is a boomerang. It drops you right where you started.” “Travel is fun, so it is not mysterious that we like it. What is mysterious is why we imbue it with a vast significance, an aura of virtue. If a vacation is merely the pursuit of unchanging change, an embrace of nothing, why insist on its meaning?” “You don’t like to think about the fact that someday you will do nothing and be nobody. You will only allow yourself to preview this experience when you can disguise it in a narrative about how you are doing many exciting and edifying things.” Daarom, in het kort, in de woorden van Fernando Pessoa: “Ah, let those who don’t exist travel! Travel is for those who cannot feel… Only extreme poverty of the imagination justifies having to move around to feel.”

Your Personality, Explained by Your Annoying Household Habits 💁🏻‍♂️

Pijnlijk raak dit artikel… Onze persoonlijkheden uitgelegd in onze huiselijke onhebbelijkheden. Iedereen zit ertussen: De post-opstapelaars, voet-vegers, afwas-wekers. You know who you are, maar wat zegt het over je? De kortste beschrijving als voorbeeld: “Keeping Leftovers in the Fridge Past the Point of Viability Let’s not mince moldy garlic—you’ve got severe abandonment issues, which cause you to hold onto every damn thing. A perpetual people pleaser, you fear tossing something that may have potential because, well, it will all be good if you just wait awhile and add a little Lawry’s. It’s not. Lesson almost learned.”

“Some will have you believe that the hardest part of parting with your belongings is choosing which items must go. Not so; saying goodbye is easy. Finding new homes for your stuff is the challenge.” Mijn lievelingstip is de laatste: “tip no. 5: A major perk of death is that you don’t have to clean up after yourself. If you can’t muster the courage to deal with your three storage units, leave the contents to your heirs. Mention in the will that there’s something valuable in one of them.”

Social media is doomed ☠️

Dat gebeurde niet: “Today, the product evolution of social media apps has led to a point where I’m not sure you can even call them social anymore - at least not in the way we always knew it. … So one day - it’s hard to say exactly when - a switch was flipped. Away from news, away from followers, away from real friends - toward the final answer to earning more time from users: highly addictive shortform videos that magically appear to numb a chaotic, crowded brain. … Are relationships made of likes from family members, birthday wishes from strangers, and retweets from long-lost colleagues? Or is this stuff just something that was invented all those years ago? The shame is that these tools are so convenient and addictive that, at times, they can start to replace the real thing. … Perhaps this was just a blip in the journey of tech, born of a time when oversharing was novel and fun. Indeed, I remember the joy of posting hundreds of photos to Facebook the day after a party, excited to relive those memories with friends. At the time, it felt like a new form of connection. Now, I just text them.”

The Godfather II, The Sound of Music. “Commercially, length has often worked. Not only was Hollywood’s longtime box-office champion the nearly four-hour-long “Gone with the Wind” but, in Hollywood’s troubled fifties and sixties, such three-hour-plus films as “The Ten Commandments,” “Ben-Hur,” “Spartacus,” and “Lawrence of Arabia” were major hits, as were “My Fair Lady,” and “Camelot,” one minute from it. Then “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Godfather: Part II,” and “The Deer Hunter” were among the biggest hits of the following decade. In recent years, the length of the leading box-office champions has, on average, increased, with such films as “Dances with Wolves,” “Schindler’s List,” “Titanic,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” “King Kong,” and “Pearl Harbor. … The long film is without conventions—it’s like turning a football field, with its sidelines and yard lines, into an open field, unmarked and unbounded and in demand of exploration, offering filmmakers the opportunity to discover the unknown at the risk of getting lost. What such length provides is more of whatever a filmmaker has to offer, more self-revelation, for better or worse. … Ordinary filmmakers make long movies mere slogs: those whose ambition exceeds their artistry reveal their public-facing strivings and pleadings for recognition; but, for the greats, such as Scorsese, it’s a canvas as big as the world.” 🤗
